President Bola Ahmed Tinubu |
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is now attending the 66th Ordinary Summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at State House in Abuja.
The current session is likely to focus on promoting regional economic integration, among other problems.
The meeting is also anticipated to address issues raised following the announcement of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger’s intention to resign from the regional group.
The 66th Ordinary Summit will also consider the organization’s sanctions placed on three countries following recent military coups, with the objective of combining diplomatic efforts with its core commitment to fostering democracy.
The gathering will discuss serious challenges such as the rise of terrorism in the Sahel region and political instability in member countries.
The leaders of the regional group are also expected to reassess deadlines in countries under military administration, with a focus on faster transitions to civilian authority.
During the most recent conference, President Tinubu appointed Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to act as a go-between for ECOWAS and the three Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso countries.
President Faye’s report is also scheduled to be delivered to ECOWAS leaders, with the goal of identifying solutions for the future.
