Nigerians have been advised by the Peoples Democratic Party Forum of Former Speakers to expect the return of several lawmakers who have departed the party in recent years to join other political organizations.
According to the Forum, the PDP is the most popular, well-run, and most-suited political party to deal with the problems facing the country.
Following a meeting with the PDP minority leadership in the House of Representatives at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Friday, this statement was released.
Kingsley Chinda, the House Minority Leader; Ali Isa, the Minority Whip; Inuwa Garba, the Forum Chairman and a member of the 10th House of Representatives; and Williams Edor, the Forum Secretary, were all in attendance.
Bakitta Bello, Friday Itulah, Kwamoti Laori, and Ndanusa Hassan were among the other attendees.
After the meeting, Hon. Garba told reporters that certain defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC) were unlawful and that he was confident individuals who had left the PDP would soon return.
“We think that some of these defections are unlawful because they violate the constitution,” he stated. Some politicians prioritize their interests over the needs of their constituents or the country.
“Some people are unable to be prevented from changing political parties. However, because Nigerians are now more knowledgeable and conscious of what is best for both themselves and the country, you will soon see a wave of defections back to the PDP.
“A single member of a constituency may decide to leave the party for personal reasons, but the voters he left behind are aware of their values and what is best for them.”
Garba went on to say that every credible politician in Nigeria today was once cultivated by the PDP.
He continued by accusing the ruling party of trying to sabotage the democratic process, saying, “Any politician you see as credible today was nurtured by the PDP, a party that remains the most widely spread in Africa.”
“It won’t function. You can do whatever you want when the moment is right, but you can’t always get what you want,” he remarked.
Party members were advised by the Forum to “remain steadfast and united in the face of the current challenges facing the nation” at the meeting.
PDP leaders and members at all levels were also urged to believe “in the ongoing efforts to strengthen and unify the party.”
Political pundits are worried about the opposition’s prospects of overthrowing the governing party in 2027 after the PDP just lost Senator Ned Nwoko and House of Representatives member Amos Magaji to the APC.
