Radda Distributes 40,000 Goats to Empower Women, Farmers

Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, has launched the distribution of 40,000 goats under the Goat Rearing Initiative Programme, a ₦5.7 billion project aimed at making the state a hub for livestock production.

The initiative focuses on women’s economic empowerment by providing local farmers—particularly women’s groups—with the resources, training, and support needed for successful goat rearing.

Implemented through the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Community Level Committees, the program acknowledges the vital role women play in economic growth and community development.

The launch event, held in Dan-Nakola town, Daura Local Government Area, also covered key aspects such as livestock nutrition, health management, and sustainable farming techniques. Beneficiaries will receive training to enhance their breeding skills.

As part of the program, 10 women and one large-scale farmer from each of the 361 political wards have been selected to participate. Each woman will receive four goats (one male and three females), while large-scale farmers will receive 50 goats each.

Beyond livestock distribution, the initiative includes infrastructure development and financial support to ensure sustainability. Beneficiaries are required to repay in kind by returning an equal number of animals after a specified period.

Speaking at the event, State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon. Hadiza Yar’adua, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Livestock and Grazing Reserves, Yusuf Jibia, described the initiative as a strategic investment in economic sustainability and livelihood enhancement.

Governor Radda also announced plans to establish a goat farm in Rimi Local Government within the Katsina Senatorial Zone. The facility will focus on genetic improvement, high milk production, and manure generation, serving as a breeding and training center for goat farming and animal husbandry.
