Katsina Govt Allocates N160m for 700-Year-Old Danmarna Cemetery Upgrade

The Katsina State Government has approved N160 million for the upgrade of the 700-year-old Danmarna Cemetery, located in the state capital.

The Chairman of the Katsina State Zakat and Waqf Board, Dr. Ahmad Filinsamji, disclosed this on Tuesday during an inspection visit to the cemetery.

Explaining how part of the funding was secured, Filinsamji said that proceeds from the sale of sacrificial meat during the 2024 Hajj contributed significantly.

“Every year, Hajj pilgrims perform animal sacrifice (Hadya) as an expression of gratitude. During the last Hajj, we decided to sell the meat from the sacrifice and raised about N127 million. Upon our return to Nigeria, we allocated the funds for the cemetery upgrade,” he stated.

He further revealed that Governor Dikko Radda approved the remaining amount needed to complete the estimated N160 million project.

The upgrade includes the construction of a modern mortuary to temporarily hold bodies in cases of accidents until their relatives are located. Additionally, a training center will be established to properly educate those responsible for bathing the dead.

Other components of the project include the provision of ambulances, paved walkways for easier movement within the cemetery, solar-powered lighting, and concrete benches for individuals with mobility issues. The perimeter fence is also being reconstructed.

Filinsamji explained that the cemetery is divided into eight segments, with new sections being opened only after existing ones are fully occupied.

He reassured the public that the government has no plans to impose burial fees after the renovation, dismissing rumors suggesting otherwise.

The project has reached approximately 60% completion and is expected to be finalized by May. Following this, the board plans to upgrade three additional cemeteries in Katsina town after the 2025 Hajj.
