‎Court Orders INEC to Register National Democratic Party

-

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the National Democratic Party (NDP) as a political party.

‎The order was issued by Justice Mohammed Umar in a judgment delivered on February 16. The court held that the promoters of the party had satisfied all the requirements stipulated under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act, 2022 for registration as a political party.

‎Justice Umar nullified INEC’s letter dated December 18, 2025, which rejected the application for registration, describing it as invalid and of no legal effect.

‎The court consequently directed INEC to register the NDP immediately and to grant it all rights, privileges, and official documents accorded to duly registered political parties in Nigeria.

‎The judge further ruled that in the event INEC fails to comply with the order, the National Democratic Party shall be deemed registered in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act.
