The Katsina State Ministry of Environment has engaged in a high-level meeting with Brazil based Guardians Worldwide, in collaboration with GWW Africa Limited, to explore a strategic partnership on the development of a Carbon Economy. The initiative aims to harness the state’s forests to capture and manage carbon dioxide for trade in the global carbon market.

According to a press release signed by Basira Abubakar, Public Relations Officer of the Department of Banking and Finance, the visit was facilitated by the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Banking and Finance, Hajiya Bilkisu Sulaiman Ibrahim. It followed an earlier audience with Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, who welcomed the team and described carbon trading as “a frontier in climate finance that Katsina must embrace.” He added that the programme aligns with the state’s long-term ambition of building a resilient economy rooted in sustainability, innovation, and global cooperation.

At the Ministry of Environment, discussions centered on identifying both gazetted and non-gazetted forests that could be included in the project. The visiting delegation also submitted a formal request for detailed data on forest size, location, gazettement status, and tree species composition to aid proper planning.

Welcoming the initiative, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry pledged to provide the requested data to support a comprehensive forest needs assessment. The partnership is expected to strengthen environmental conservation while unlocking significant economic opportunities for Katsina through participation in the global carbon market.
