Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has stated that there is no certainty he will still be alive by the time Nigeria’s 2027 general election takes place, urging political leaders to focus on solving the country’s current challenges instead of engaging in early election campaigns.
According to The Guardian Nigeria, Obi made the remark while speaking about the growing political activities ahead of the 2027 elections.
He explained that his statement was not driven by fear but by the reality that human life is unpredictable, and no one can confidently say they will still be alive in the coming years.
The former Anambra State governor said it was inappropriate for politicians to devote so much attention to the next election when millions of Nigerians are struggling with severe economic hardship, rising inflation, unemployment, widespread insecurity, and other pressing national issues.
Obi stressed that the primary responsibility of elected leaders is to improve the living conditions of the people by implementing policies that will strengthen the economy, create jobs, enhance security, and restore public confidence in governance.
He further noted that rather than spending valuable time and resources on political calculations for 2027, public office holders should concentrate on delivering meaningful results that will positively impact the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
According to him, nobody can guarantee they will still be alive by 2027, making it more important for leaders to make the best use of the time they have in office by addressing the immediate needs of the country.
Obi concluded by urging political leaders across party lines to place national development above personal political ambition, emphasizing that Nigerians expect good governance and practical solutions to the nation’s problems, not premature electioneering.
