Nigerian Army Arrests Suspected Fake Soldier in Katsina

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the arrest of a man suspected of impersonating a soldier in Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State during a routine patrol conducted by its troops to ensure security in the area.

In a statement issued by the Army, it said troops of the 17 Brigade arrested the suspect at about 1:30 p.m. on July 4, 2026, after spotting him wearing a pair of military-style shorts. This drew the attention of the officers, who stopped him for questioning.

The Army said that during the initial investigation, the suspect failed to provide evidence proving that he was a soldier. This led to a more thorough search, which resulted in the discovery of several items suspected to be fake or unlawfully possessed.

Items recovered from him included a suspected fake military identity card, four ATM cards, a pair of military shorts, a wristwatch, and N17,000 in cash.

The Nigerian Army stated that the suspect and all recovered items have been detained for further investigation, including determining whether other individuals were involved in the incident.

The Army also reiterated its commitment to continuing the fight against criminals, especially those who unlawfully use security personnel uniforms to deceive the public or commit other crimes.

It also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report anyone suspected of using security uniforms or presenting themselves as government officials without valid authorization, in order to assist security agencies in ensuring peace and the safety of lives and property.
