INEC Denies Chairman’s Alleged X Account

-

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed as false a claim circulating on social media that its Chairman once expressed support for a political opinion on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

In a statement issued in Abuja on April 10, 2026, the Chairman’s spokesperson, Adedayo Oketola, described the allegation as fabricated and intended to tarnish the image of the Chairman.

INEC stated that its Chairman does not operate any personal account on X and has never engaged in political activities through the platform, either publicly or privately.

The Commission added that the false report is an attempt to create doubt in the minds of the public about its credibility and integrity, especially as it prepares for electoral reforms and upcoming elections.

INEC further noted that it is aware of cybercriminals who use the Chairman’s name to create fake accounts in order to defraud unsuspecting members of the public. It said some of these individuals have already been identified and reported to security agencies.

The Commission said it is working closely with security operatives and digital forensic experts to track down those responsible and ensure they face legal action.

It also warned that identity theft and the spread of false information on social media are offences under cybercrime laws, carrying penalties for offenders.

Finally, INEC urged the public to disregard the misinformation and rely only on its official communication channels for accurate information.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to conducting credible elections with transparency and fairness in Nigeria.
